1998 – The Creation of Queens West

The Queens waterfront, an underutilized parcel of land located directly across the river from midtown Manhattan, has been a target of redevelopment for many years.  In 1998 the 74 acre parcel of land bound by the Newtown Creek to the south, and the Anabel Basin to the north, was rezoned to allow a series of high-rise residential buildings, public parks, and community facilities.

The project, known as Queens West, will include as many as 20 buildings and thousands of luxury apartments.  Now in phase two of the four phase project, 3 luxury high-rises are have been completed, and three more are under construction to be completed in 2007.

In October of 2006, the southern most portion of Queens West was sold by the Port Authority to the City of New York.  The Mayor’s office has announced a plan to create as many as 5,000 units of middle income housing on that parcel.
