Dutch Kills is a region in the Greater Long Island City area, just north of Queens Plaza. The boundaries are 21st Street on the west, Queens Plaza North and Northern Boulevard on the south, 38th Street on the east, and 36th Avenue on the north. The region overlaps six census tracts - 27,29,31,49,51 and 55. All but tract 27 fall completely within Dutch Kill's boundaries. The information used in this profile was taken from the US Government's Census website. The demographic data is from the 2000 census, and the economic data is from a 1999 survey.
Demographic Profile
The population of Dutch Kills was 7,761 in 2000. Of that number 2,918 or 37.6 % of the population identified themselves as white, 1,996 or 25.7% identified themselves as Asian, 1,752 or 22.3% identified themselves as other, 796 or 10.3% identified themselves as two or more races, and 171 or two percent identified themselves as black. The census does not count Hispanics as a separate race, so those who are Latin immigrants or of Latin descent fell into one of the above categories. The census does however identify Hispanics, which gives the demographic profile of Dutch Kills more clarity. Hispanics numbered 3,226 or 42% of the population. Country or region of origin was used to further identify the Hispanic population, and the largest percentage (43.4%) came from "other" (South and Central America), Mexicans were the second largest group at 31.6%, and Puerto Ricans made up nine percent. The Asian population is largely immigrant. Residents of Indian descent (19.8%) made up the largest percentage of the Asian population, followed by Chinese (15.5%), and Filipino (nine percent).
