About Long Island City

Long Island City is the westernmost part of Queens, just a few minutes across the East River from midtown Manhattan. Its close proximity to midtown, and its ample transportation connections, has made it an increasingly attractive location for all types of businesses.

Originally settled by farmers in Colonial times, the area was developed by heavy industry in the 1800s. (More about the history of LIC.) Its economy has diversified widely in recent decades. New York City is moving ahead with various projects to encourage additional commercial development in Long Island City, while preserving already well-established manufacturing, distribution and industrial services, and supporting a thriving arts sector.

A Home to Numerous Well Established Businesses

162 of the businesses in the Long Island City area have provided information on their years in operation in the community as part of the survey conducted by LICBDC staff members.  After analyzing the data we have found that the average total amount of time these businesses have been in operation is 30 years.  We have also found that the average amount of time these businesses have been at their current location is 17 years. According to the New York State Department of Labor, the 11101 zip code hosts over 2,400 companies and over 50,000 employees, as of the 3rd quarter of 2000. When other zip codes in nearby Western Queens are included, the number of area companies rises to over 6,000, with about 89,000 employees.
